Absztrakt

Social and psychological motivation of ’deteriorating’ translations

Abstract

Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. A language is not merely a collection of words and of rules of grammar and syntax for generating sentences, but also a vast interconnecting system of connotations and cultural- hystorical references, so a faithful translation has to reflect all these extralinguistic factors. This requirment is particularly important in translation of literary texts, since their esthetic values are inseparable from the cultural-hystorical context of their production and interpretation. Translators have to take into account the whole cultural-hystorical context of both the source and target language. A particular translation is called deteriorating, if it does not succed in accepting and reflecting the cultural-hystorical connotations of the literary work to be translated. By analysing Hungarian and Russian translations we show that the historical stereotypes of the target language can modify the meaning of the original text during the translation process.
