Absztrakt
Jelen írásban, amely a Tömegkommunikációs Kutatóközpont (TK) alapításának ötvenedik évfordulója alkalmából rendezett konferencián tartott előadásom írott s némiképp kibővített változata, megkísérlem a TK leginkább termékeny időszakát elemezni egy világrendszer-elméleti keretben. A dolgozatban empirikus adatokra támaszkodva amellett érvelek, hogy a TK teljesíténye mind történeti kontextusban, a bipoláris rendszeren belül értelmezve, mind pedig pusztán tudománymetriai értelemben egyedülálló. Ez utóbbi tétel arra vonatkozik, hogy a bipoláris világrendszert követő időszakban sem ismerünk olyan hazai kommunikációkutatással foglalkozó intézetet, amely képes lett volna a TK eredményességét felmutatni. Ezért tartom különösen fontosnak a TK gyakorlatának tudományos igényű kutatását, mert a feltárt eredmények segíthetik a szakmát a jó gyakorlatok megismerésében és elsajátításában.

Abstract
In this paper, which is a written and slightly expanded version of my presentation at the conference that was organized on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Mass Communication Research Centre (TK), I attempt to analyze the most prolific period of TK in a world systems theory framework. Relying on empirical research I argue that the scholarly performance of TK is unique in both a historical context (interpreted historically in a bipolar world-system) and pure scientometric sense that does not take into account the appropriate societal and political context. This means that even after the transition, we cannot find any other Hungarian institute in communication and media studies that could be compared to TK in terms of international productivity. As a consequence, I consider it extremely important to make thorough scholarly research on TK’s operation, because the revealed results can help communication and media studies to further understand and master the good practices for which the TK become an internationally-recognized research institution.
